We are getting really deep in the festive season, and I'm so glad that I only have two days of class left before Christams break. The past week has been... something. One of the main symptoms of migraines I experience is brainfog, AKA stupid brain disease. It's hard to explain brainfog to someone who doesn't experience it, because it's a very distinct experience. The best way I can put it is that taking any decision becomes extremly hard, and you feel like your brain is running way slower than usual. The last few days I had almost constant brainfog, and I've been feeling like an old pc getting stuck on the desktop when trying to lunch a program. I really can't wait for Christmas break to come around, so I can get some very much needed rest at last.
One thing that my brainfog has really been messing with is my quest to find an affordable mechanical keyboard.
Despite being 20 years old, and not writing a letter to Santa Clause anymore, I still ask my parents for a specfic gift to
receive on Christams. My original plan was to ask for a mechanical keyboard. My current desktop keyboard has a couple
of issues, and I'd really like to invest in a mechanical one becuase of how customizable and easy to repair they are.
However, the world of mechanical keyboard is a rabbit hole I was not ready to go down. There is so much to consider: size,
switch type, materials, price range,... @_@
In the end, I managed to narrow it down to a bunch of specs I want: wireed, 80%, ISO layout, linear switches.
But that still leaves the problem of actually choosing the keyboard in the sea of mechanical keyboards available.
If I have to be honest, I'd prefer building a custom rather than gettong a hot-swappable pre-built. Just
because I really like getting my hands on tech and building things. However, from my research, it seems
that it's hard to put together a keyboard from scratch for less than 100€+. And I was definetly aiming at the
70-80€ price range. Budgeting with tech is always hard, because you don't want to spend too much but neither
to cheap out and having to replace the hardware immediately. That's mostly the reaosn why I decided to not even consider the
30-50€ keyboards. Pretty much all the reviews of models in that price range mention that they aren't sturdy and that the
build quality isn't that good, and many of them aren't hot-swappable either.
In the end, I gave up on picking a keyboard in time for it to be a Christmas present, so I asked my parents for an alarm clock and alcohol-free beer. I cannot drink currently because of the meds I am on, and I thoroughly miss having the occasional beer with my friends. So, considering that alcohol-free beer isn't that easy to find here, I think it would make a decent Christmas present.
Tomorrow, a friend of mine is coming to my house to study in the morning. We do this every week, and usally one of us cooks lunch. So this is a great chance to empty my fridge. I'm going to go back to my parents house during Christmas break, meaning that, if I leave anything in the fridge of the apartment, it will likely spoil. What worried me the most is the huge half-empty sack of potatoes. I think I'll make vegetable curry. This way I can get rid of all the potatoes and onions left, and I could add some frozen spinach and some canned chickpeas to spice things up. I'll probably preapare it this evening after class, so tomorrow I'll only have to heat it up and cook some rice.
P.S: The past weekend I went with my parents to a museum here in the area. They were holding two art exhibitions
we were interested in: one about J. R .R. Tolkien, and one about William Blake and similar painters. But I think I will talk about it in a future entry :3c
